I guess the local yokels didn't have night sights for their scopes...a lawn chair looks nothing like a gun.

Midvale, Utah? WTF they have a SWAT team.

Authorities ticketed Kranz for trespassing, then ordered him off the school grounds.

What happend to the idiot cop that was too much of a pussy to get a closer look and see that a lawn chair isn't much of a weapon. My guess, trip to the donut shop.

Why wasn't there a sign saying you can't go on the roof? Whenever I don't see a sign I do it.

I could see how it would be confused with a sniper rifle case when the guy was carrying it up the ladder.

P.S. I have no idea how to embed a picture here.

This is a picture of a breakdown lawn chair and carrying case I found with a quick search on Amazon. The carrying case is black and approximately the same shape as a rifle case.

As for the Officer getting closer... You mean to tell me if you saw someone at a distance climbing up onto a roof with a rifle case, you'll stroll over to get a better look? The Officer did the exactly right thing. He got the fans out of the line of sight and called in the guys with sniper rifles of their own.

If he didn't do that, and it was an actual rifle, then you'd be on here bitching about 'Dumb ass cop shoulda got everyone under cover instead of getting himself shot trying to get closer like a dumbass'

Yeah morte your right, the cop shouldn't try and do his job, what is written on the side of their cars? Shit he looked much more competent putting in a false alarm and getting that trespasser collar. A closer look could mean using binoculars. I wonder if he ran out in the middle of the playing field waving his arms and screaming his false alarm.

From: morte266 [Old and Tired]
Date: 18-Oct-2006 14:18

Uhh, cops don't carry Binos in their patrol cars... or rifles with scopes... what was he supposed to do? Shit a pair?

He was protecting and serving... by getting any potential targets out of the line of fire. And calling in SWAT to handle the problem.

I say again the cop did everything right. The only problem was that some things in long black cases aren't rifles.

Ha ha ha ha! Darwin has been hitting Utah really hard lately.

We've also had a run on people playing "frogger" on our interstate and getting smooshed. Two dead in one day.

Then some 16 year old kid smashes a woman in a wheel chair crossing in a cross walk. He drove off.

And THEN! In an excellent example of bad parenting. Some moron does a drive by shooting with his kids in the car. Yay!... Fucking morons..

I know from the few posts of yours that I have caught that you are in law enforcement, Morte. Thank you for all you do to help make our communities safer. XOXO

There's one other - I forget her new, more creative name, but she's around and I love her, too. Mwa!

P.S. This guy is an idiot. How could he think it'd be okay to climb up on the school roof?

We used to do it all the time as kids, though. We thought we were pretty bad-ass because of it, too.

From: morte266 [Old and Tired]

With all the school shootings lately? I doubt if it would be classified as an overreaction.

The rotten part about this is that now lawn chairs will be considered "duel-use" items by security personnel everywhere.

Okay, when I first read the story, I was chucklin', cuz in my mind I've got the picture that Acrimony posted above - and I'm thinking what should one expect from cops in Utah?

However, thanks to Officer Morte learning how to post his pics, I had to reluctantly turn that chuckle into a respectful grin and nodding motion. With shootings occurring at as many schools as NRA meetings recently, if indeed Daddy was carrying his chair in one of those bags, getting people out of sight of a potential Whitman was what the copper needed to do.

I'd love to have seen the look on a few of the faces concerned, though... the dad wondering why he's got a SWAT team aiming at him, the embarrassed cop who brought out a goddam SWAT team for a man with a chair... hilarious. It could only have been funnier if cops had shot the dad.

When I first read the title "Hey get down from there" then I read about a guy pacing back and forth on the roof, ..the first thing that popped into my mind was a "suicide jumper" and a cop on the ground yelling "hey get down from there" ! Which would have been real funny if that's what happened, but it's not. Anyways I'm stoned.

From: selfcleaning [buttocks]

They should have shot and killed him!

It's about time these troublemakers get what they deserve.

From: richfeelmo [Silence is golden when you can't think of a good answer]
Date: 18-Oct-2006 20:41

I see loriforgie and myself agree. I thought suicide as well. I thought the article would read, "An officer saw a man on top of the roof, walking around, pacing back and forth," Olsen said. "He was acting extremely suspicious." "hey you get down from there" yells olsen. then the man on the roof jumped.
It was just so plausible.

From: fauxpas [regularly regressing]

Reminds me of recent comedy central 'freakshow'.. the part where a guy is in rafters with what appears to be a sniper rifle, but its a camera that looks exactly like a rifle, and he's always being mistaken for a sniper.

If a stupid fucktard cop can't tell a lawn chair from a rifle, perhaps the stupid fucktard needs to find another line of work, like flipping burgers.

Assheads with GEDs should not be given jobs that require them to think.

I use 12-gauge shotgun shells in my lawn chair. Although I do know people who like to use squirrel shot. Basically, it's your choice.

1) SWAT team would have had night vision scopes/binoculars
2) The chances that this guy is a sniper vs some random dude being an idiot?

If the guy with the chair can get access to a ladder to the roof, the cop could, too. If I saw a possible sniper in this situation I'd radio for backup and try to stop the guy before he started shooting...even if I wasn't a cop. I don't know if police policy is so detailed that they have rules of engagement for possible snipers, but common sense would be to take out the threat before he starts taking out targets...or at least confront the threat. Instead of confronting the guy the police have all sorts of time to clear the field and whip everyone into a panic. If he was a sniper it sounds like he had all sorts of time to start capping people. A real sniper would have known something was wrong when the field cleared and fled.

From: morte266 [Old and Tired]
Date: 19-Oct-2006 14:59

Hmm, do you realize exactly how helpless you are if the guy is standing on the roof with a rifle and you try to approach the building armed with only a pistol? Of even more helpless as you are climbing a ladder. You can't dodge... can't hide behind cover... hell can't even have your pistol out and climb effectively... talk about a sitting duck. you are half way up the ladder and he steps to the edge and places one bullet through the top of your head and watches as it exits out your ass.

Nope, the cop did exactly what he was supposed to do. He got the civilians out of the way. after that he probably kept an eye on the guy, but there was no reason to even try to get close at that point until the team showed up.

If the guy wuld have had a rifle the police officer would have been so out gunned it wouldn't have been funny.

Range:

Rifle 150 yds to 1k yds depending on the rifle...

Pistol 25 yds to 50 yds depending on the skill fo the shooter

plus a rifle will blow through a vest like you weren't wearing one.

Nope waiting for SWAT was the only reasonable thing to do. Now if shots were actually going off it would be another story.

As for the SWAT having scopes and goggles... yep... and they didn't see a weapon... how do I know? the guy is still alive.

You have to be barely literate and completely sadistic with a raging blood-lust, a lack of self-control and absolutely no common sense while totally willing to blindly follow orders to be a good cop.
