Soldiers go where they are ordered to be deployed and guess what Stipic....gasp..... A majority of them do not want to go to war, but do so out of duty. They are not blood thirsty. I remember this now. This is one of the things you put to the back of your mind because it was just so incredibly wrong but there was NO alternative. The infrastructure was in ruins if there was one at all. Often there wasn't. This is a country in which most people drove donkey carts and beat up Mercedes. The 'cedes drivers were often cabbies. go figure. Terrorists on the other hand liked AMERICAN CARS because they were big, fast and could carry a ton of explosive. We had standing orders to shoot anyone driving a large vehicle that didn't obey orders to pull over and or remove itself from a military column. Hairy shit. Besides that, the burn pits were often lit right after dinner chow ended so if you got there late you would want to hurl. You would see it glowing in the distance and belching this this oily smoke which hugged the ground. I often commented that these were portals to Hell.

Good questions and valid ones. I enlisted Nov 22, 1966, after I flunked out of Ole Miss, and knew that I was going to be drafted. Basic at Fort Benning, Permanent Party at USAITC Sand Hill, Ft Benning (one year), Vietnam Combat Theatre 1 year (almost to the day, got to see Bob Hope!), final active duty assignment HHC 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) Fort Carson, Colorado. 3 years Reserves, final discharge 21 Nov. 72. Joined the Mississippi State Guard (look it up) was granted a commission as CPT, and have just retired out as LTC. Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (and a slew of state awards, Including the Mississippi Medal of Commendation.) Good enuff fer ya? And I did some of it nekkid!

Oh, I made E-5 in under two years despite not getting my E-4 on time at Benning 'cause there weren't any slots! If I had I could have made E-6 (Staff Sergeant) under two! Yes, I was THAT good! At one point overseas I had the most time in grade as a PFC E-3 with no blemish on the record of anybody on my base! They called me a "Command PFC"! LOL I orignally joined to be an Armor Officer (Patton was my idol) but when my approval came through for OCS with NO waivers (the only one in my basic training company) they were going to assign me to Infantry, and I declined the appointment. It was a mistake on my part I know now. I volunteered for Vietnam and, from there, I just went where the Department of the Army (as do all soldiers) assigned me and sent me. I have no idea why I as Regular Army stayed at Benning so long. BTW, this is a little known secret, the Military DOES NOT send its BEST and BRIGHTEST to die in the trenches. Score as high as you can on the test.
