"Mr Harvey, an experienced and well respected teacher, is said to have "snapped" and lost control after the teenager allegedly swore at him during a physics lesson. As pupils rushed to his aid and attempted to pull Mr Harvey away, he is accused of assaulting two other 14 year-olds, a boy and a girl, who were not seriously injured... The boy was left lying in a pool of blood and fighting for his life."

It's a generation gap thing. When I was in middle school (late '60s Ohio) every teacher had a paddle and would call you up in front of the class and give you a crack or two of you mouthed off in class or otherwise disrespected the teacher, or even talked too much in class. Clearly, we were better behaved until they outlawed coropral punishment in schools. Now the places are fucking zoos. We had a one-armed science teacher, Mr Cavender, who lost an arm in Korea. His good arm was pretty fucking huge. On the first or second day of school, he would administer one crack to a kid who was yakking in the back of class, breaking the paddle in two, usually. Nobody, but nobody, mouthed off in his class after that, guaranteed. Fucking liberal wimps outlawed paddling and this is the result: a generation of cretins who are too busy talking and texting to learn a damned thing.

"He would talk to himself a lot but I never thought he would do this." It's funny because that quote reminded me of a science teacher I once had. My teacher was a very brilliant man, extremely gifted but he seemed a little "off". He talked to himself all the time, he seemed really sensitive and afraid to get close with the students, and I'm talking in the sense of helping them with their work. It was such a problem that the principal had to have a word with him, no one ever disrespected him but he was very guarded, but he would show a human side every now and then when a student would assure him that he is a good teacher. I guess the guy was really sensitive and a self-doubter, but ALL people in the science field are quirky & eccentric to say the least. I remember him being somewhat fascinated by me as I was the only student he ever had going into funeral services, he also seemed somewhat repulsed by it, anyway... Though I don't think the kid should get killed, I feel kids are getting too disrespectful now a days & need a good smack on the wrist. The kid should be expelled & sent to the "bad kids" school, where do these punks get off disrespecting their elders? Especially someone who is giving them the gift of knowledge.

Perhaps if more teachers half killed uppity kids then kids wouldn't be so uppity. When I was a schoolboy teachers were supplied with a belt. This they used on their victims hands. Having been on the receiving end of the belt many times I can assure you that it really hurt. But I don't remember any kid daring to swear at a teacher.

I'm with you Stud. Our schools in the 70s had paddling. The trick was to get a feel for how much you could irritate a teacher before they got genuinely angry. I picked up a few detentions, but no paddlings. Today, the inmates run the asylum. One kid sued a school for $20 M because a music teacher grabbed her hands to show how to place her fingers on a clarinet.

We have people lined up 3 times around the block looking to be a teacher, on the rare occasion when a job opens up...usually a good looking broad gets the job, making me wonder how many people she had to "make happy" in order to land the job...
