Yeah I saw that episode of ST:TNG where the Enterprise was trapped in a phaser battle with another ship, frozen in time. It sucked.

That's a good idea. I always thought dark matter was just something they made up to explain a phenomena that doesn't fit into a flawed conventional explanation, kind of like ether back in the 19th century.
