Feelin' aidsy
World Peace Herald | Submitted by: primer gray erection
"U.S. doctors said they have identified the patient who is the source of a mystery strain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that sent waves of alarm through the AIDS community last February. Public-health officials in New York City issued a warning because the patient apparently had developed a virulent form of HIV -- the organism that causes AIDS -- that was resistant to virtually all drugs and caused a rapid destruction of the man's immune system."

A wap bop a loo bop--a wap bam boom
Ever wonder when "hetero" HIV will hit American shores? (or Russian shores? or Chinese shores... or Scandinavian shores?)
Apparently, Africa has the monopoly on so-called hetero HIV transmission. If you think you can believe the CDC, WHO & UNAIDS, which, unfortunately, you shouldn't. Hint: it's transmitted the same way in Africa that it's transmitted here... blood to blood and semen to blood.

Maybe we should stop trying to halt AIDS' progress and let it have it's way with humanity. It worked with the Black Plague...

Sad to think anyone could knowingly give HIV to anyone.
Str8 or gay.... you should self terminate if you give it to anyone else.

Won't work. It's mode of transmission is WAY too specific, despite the politically-correct rhetoric of the CDC, UNAIDS, WHO, Act-Up, the USPHS, the British PHS, etc... It will continue to trickle on in gay and IV drug circles in the developed world, while blasting the poor in the undeveloped world. Your tax dollars at work. Watch out for Avian flu... and be careful what you ask for. You don't want to relive the 1917-1918 flu season.

Looks to be some religious right 'culture of death' homophobes here posting comments. Where you been there scarrshiit --- AIDS heavily affects the 'hetero' community of so called 'straight' folk - perhaps more so in the Gay Old Party of Xtian republican pedophiles though since so many are 'in the closet.'
Some of you christian motivated gay hatemongers sound more like Jerry Falls well into his own private hell spouting: "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals. To oppose it would be like an Israelite jumping in the Red Sea to save one of Pharaoh’s charioteers." Jerry Falwell: Chief Christian Bigot and hatemonger..

"the organism that causes AIDS"
...HIV is a virus.
Viruses aren't alive.
Therefore, HIV is not an organism.
Way to go World Peace Herald, your editor failed intro biology.

Nary a problem, Dr. Nihilist. Anon the douchebag's attitude of disease=societal cleanser is sadly all too common. (as common as the "it's" vs. possesive "its" mistake I made in my original post.) It was precisely this attitude that gave rise to the politically-correct fiction that HIV would break out of gay and drug-using circles in the US and infect every Senator's blonde-haired blue-eyed daughter. The subsequent drain on the disease-fighting resources worldwide have been immense... not only due to right-winger allowance of unchecked spread in the early outbreak years at home, but also due to left-wing suppression of the best ways to fight the disease here and abroad: proper characterization of the modes of transmission (tootie and shootie here, and primarily bloodborne everywhere else in the world including Africa), and enhanced disease surveillance, named reporting, and contact tracing in the developed world. As political animals we have shot ourselves in the collective foot.

"Maybe we should stop trying to halt AIDS' progress and let it have it's way with humanity. It worked with the Black Plague..."
Um, what?
If you or someone you cared about were infected with HIV/AIDS, would you rather have it run its course? Should we let cancer "progress" and leave stricken people to die of it? Maybe some of you should educate yourself by thinking without such an disgustingly ignorant mentality.
Also, don't repeat that outdated logic of how only gay or needle-drug users only get infected. If HIV/AIDS was a "gay disease," it would make sense that it existed throughout various societies along history. Homosexuality wasn't "invented" sixty years ago.

I didn't say "only" gay or needle-using folks get infected. I did imply that OVERWHELMINGLY, gay and IDU folks in developed countries are the ones getting and transmitting HIV -- because it's true. It's rarely transmitted vaginally. Remember the HIV scare in the porn industry about 8 months ago? It didn't go anywhere. The women getting it were getting it up the ass (or in the arm), just like the guys. Rectal tissue us fragile...sperm in a recently infected person has lots of HIV in it... an appreciable percentage of gay males are hypersexual...like to fuck a lot. This is why the male:female ratio is stubbornly slanted towards males in the developed world... they tend to shoot more, and the ones that are promiscuous gay males are... well... promiscuous gay males. In the underdeveloped world there's a much higher female ratio out there for these reasons: using the butt for birth control (to survive, basically), women's admirable health-seeking behaviors (they go for prenatal care whenever possible because they care about their offspring and their own lives), and the shitty medical care they receive in such clinics (reusing sharps, unnecessary injections, vaccinations).
Homosexuality wasn't invented 60 years ago, but mass air travel was. Also, the animal-to-man HIV transmission event happened no earlier than the mid-to-late 1800's and never got out of Africa until about the 1950's. The reason why we haven't seen shitloads of HIV until now is due precisely to how difficult it is to transmit (thank heavens).
Same thing goes for syphilis. Check the stats. 90% of the syphilis remaining in the US (in noerthern cities, at least) is being transmitted by gay males. This is because the infectious period is very short, and the lesion is painless. If a guy gets one on his dick, he's likely to freak out, stop fucking for five minutes, and get his shot of bicillin. Gay males are more likely to get that painless lesion up the ass, where it goes unnoticed. While that lesion is there, said gay male continues to fuck and pass the infection on. And who they fuck TENDS to be another gay male.
Diseases are not democratic... they discriminate. They follow human social patterns. Get over it. My point is that interventions to control disease need to be targeted as well. Not to put affected groups down, but to eliminate the disease. HIV has absolutely no right to exist. And it's not going to "burn itself out" if we look the other way... or if we pretend it's a democratic disease. It will continue to smolder.
The illogic that HIV is not a "gay" and IV drug-using disease is what is outdated. It hasn't worked to eradicate the disease, now has it? It continues to smolder in gay and IDU circles (read the article), stubbornly refusing to behave like gonorrhea for a reason: it is bloodborne (and difficult to transmit at that). If every health jurisdiction in this country refused to knuckle-under to gay political pressure to eliminate named-reporting, contact tracing.. and if we voted knucklehead "conservatives" out of office that plunder our coffers and make disease control such a low priority at home and abroad - we wouldn't have any HIV any more. If we can eradicate smallpox and polio (nearly), HIV's a piece of cake.
Harumph.
