The residents tried putting the fire out, but were unsuccessful. More than a dozen firefighters responded to help fight the blaze."

The kid isn't being raped again either...the damage is done, and banning all evidence of it isn't going to magically restore that child's innocence. HC -I hear ya on gas/practicality issue, I don't know what, if any, diff the gas vs air makes in the sound. seems gas should give better consistancy of sound. I like the thought of modding the arc ignititor in a gas appliance, I think it wouldn't work with "hot surface" type. tell me that couldn't drive someone over the edge.

Goyl -scrounge up a neon sign transformer, make up a board with 2 polished wires, rigged like a guitar neck, about 4 ft tall, the wires at bottom, a gap bout 3/8ths in diverge to bout 2 in at top. polish wires because the arc will stop climbing and stall on nicks, points, scratches, curves etc you need the (guitar like) tension to pull out curves, also keeps em straight when they get warm

commie -- i read your post. i don't disagree with you, in terms of each one of us having the right to decide the content of what we view online. however, i also believe that content should be labelled or titled accurately to ensure that no one clicks on something expecting to see one thing and actually viewing something greatly different. the primary picture you were talking about was originally titled "what has the world come to". reading that title, i imagine war, famine, post-bombing pics... NOT a naked man defecating on a child who is tied down. war, famine, and post-bombing pics have become almost normal in our society, and the vast majority are desensitized to these images. this is not the case with the latter. as you said, there are some people who claim that everytime someone looks at pictures of children being abused, that child is abused all over again. this is, of course, only figurative, but i agree in a way. that child's dignity, character, and (in extreme cases) memory are soiled and tainted each time images of their suffering are viewed. it's easier for society to accept vile and horrible things happening to adults, possibly because we can rationalize that the victim may have somehow deserved that suffering. when these things happen to a child, someone who is truely innocent and in no way could have deserved that same treatment, it is tragic. for me, the difference is that adults are at least capable of giving consent (be it general, informed, or implied), whereas children obviously are not. i am someone who will look at gory crime scene photos, autopsy photos, and the like, and be completely disgusted and amazed at the same time. i look because i'm curious, but the effect of looking makes me appreciate life much more than i had before seeing some of these photos. if i come across something that may contain dead children, child victims, or child abuse, i will not look. i come to this site, just like the rest of you, to see what the rest of you see. but i am also a parent, as are some of the rest of you. if something horrible and vile happened to OUR children, would we post the story and pics here? i, for one, would not. this is what this site is for, but i wouldn't want people to think of my son in that light, to associate anything negative with him. how many of you would post something about your own children here? none of us will or have met each other, we are all basically just as strange to each other as the people in the stories we read. the only real commonality we have is this site. would you subject your child's tragedy to the people on this site?

That's the whole point I was making with some magical recurring rape that happens when a picture is viewed. But is it criminal? You can ban them and delete the content...but should they go to jail? Maybe if they took the pics themselves and were the one raping the kid. If it's something ripped off p2p or an image board, then no...that person hasn't raped anyone, that person hasn't taken the picture, that person hasn't profited in any way from it and is not deserving of jail. I don't want to see that kind of shit. Few people do. However, society as a whole feels that the existence of that material to be detrimental and can cause certain members of society to crave more, creating a demand. More demand, more kids used in this manner = bad. So mere possession becomes a crime. I think the punishments are too harsh however for simply looking at it. Society needs to concentrate on the makers of the images and punish them more harshly. Would it stop it? Doubtful, but it might reduce it. What I'd do to someone I caught doing this is probably a great Rotten article in itself. It would be slow, protracted and very gruesome and painful for them.

commie -- it's obviously not a recurrence of what they suffered, but it's still a violation to the victim. no, the victim doesn't know when someone sees these images, but each person who sees them knows when they saw them. i don't want to see these things either. i agree that the people who do these things to children are sick. these things should never happen to children, and in some weird way, if it does, the only person who should see it is the perpetrator. the victim didn't even see themselves in that same way, only the perpetrator. looking at these images is not criminal, unless, like you said, the viewer is the one who took the pictures or is connected to them. i think the only reason that people are being charged for looking at / possessing these photos is to understand why people would want to have / view these images in the first place. are these people somehow connected with these images, did they just stumble upon them, did they want to see them (like what they saw), did they not like what they saw (repulsed by content).

hera, that goes back to what i was saying about site / image content being accurately labeled or titled. that way people have to look exactly for the wierd stuff. of course you shouldn't be charged, you didn't know what the content was. but if you knew you were about to open something that had content that you really didn't wanna see, would you still open it? i don't open most of munchkin's pics (example: shitty stuffed animals, anything to do with shit) because i don't want to see it. i can see the thumbs in his posts and i'm able to make the choice if i want to view it larger. lots of others here do the same thing. scrolling past a thumb is also far less offensive that opening a link that implies one thing, only to open something totally different. this also removes my ability to consent to view what i am about to view. if my consent was removed by misleading information, i cannot be held accountable. neither can any other viewer of the same content. but if you see the thumb, and still click it, it's a little harder to prove that you really didn't want to view that content.

OL, that's an unusual belief. If it were the case, I'd be long dead. As a hardcore photographer I see beauty and ugliness in things that most people don't even see. It's like I can see what they can't. Not that they just don't notice, but that until I capture it, they don't see it. A ray of light striking a couple leaves in a cluster, or a single blossom, that sort of thing. Sometimes a humorous juxtaposition of things, like a long abandon lawnmower rusting behind a shed, buried in overgrown grass. I'd love to see some pics. Yes, focus is important. I may wear glasses to read and do detailed work, but they won't fix a blurry image, LOL.

GD, I posted a sampling of my shots here the other day, of the New England fall happening all around me. Due to photobuckets limits on size they don't look quite as good as I'd like here, but the idea is shown. Don't know if you got to see them. Since then the colors have intensified and it's almost overwhelming now. Quite a change from last year when it was too dry and the leaves simply dropped without the spectacular show we are being given this year. This tree out my window looks like a flame captured in still life, all different shades of red yellow and orange. I'd have taken it today,but the light is just all wrong. I'm hoping for sun tomorrow. It will be more intense that way.

I really miss it as well as I do Winter's trees after an ice storm. My fav Winter place to shoot was Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. Just been listening to what's happening with Japanese banks at the moment. It sounds dreadful! Apparently the Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and the Bonsai Bank has decided to cut some of its branches. Furthermore, its been announced that the Karaoke Bank is to be sold and is going for a song, while the Kamikaze Bank shares have been suspended after they nose-dived. Cain, they need to learn to use available light when taking mirror shots, avoids the overexposure of part of the image and the underexposure of the rest. Just open the aperture up some and lengthen the exposure a tad, no flash needed. I rarely use a flash. If I can't get the shot without it, it's not good enough. I will use a flash only if I really want to get a low light shot or for foreground fill to counter a backlight situation.
