Well, they need some reason to claim they're not the shittiest state in the union. Now they can say it stinks only because of all the skunky weed.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently reiterated its opposition to medical marijuana. The American Medical Association, National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society and National Multiple Sclerosis Society reject its use. An April report by federal Department of Human Services agencies found no data supported marijuana for general medical use.

Just what we need, more bullshit being fed to us by the government. The problem is, there are studies out there that do show a benefit from marijuana, but they are either twisted or ignored. Recently, the prohibitionists have been citing a study that says marijuana smoking causes cancer. The study they cite however doesn't say that. It does show that heavy use has a slightly greater chance of cancer but not statistically significant, light smoking shows even with the control group while moderate use shows a slight benefit. The moderate group that smoked a couple joints a month showed less cancer than the control.

Some quotes:
As a 1995 editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association said, "We are not asking readers for immediate agreement with our affirmation that marijuana is medically useful, but we hope they will do more to encourage open and legal exploration of its potential."

Finally deciding to check the AMA website itself, the first quote is misleading. The AMA recommends keeping it as a schedule 1 drug until further tests are done. It further recommends finding an alternative to smoking it. It really makes me wonder about the intentions of an organization that needs to lie and mislead in order to fulfill their agenda. Especially one that is suppose to be there in order to further society.

If anyone doesn't know, meth is a schedule 2 drug which means it can be prescribed to patients.

i was talking to someone in a game room a while back from minnestoa. she siad she deals in disability claims and the majority are from new jersey. i informed her they are probably faking it and she said they know. so if new jerseyians are good with this they should be good at faking an illness that needs medicinal pot. maybe that will make the idiots here drive slower or damage there reproductive organs so they cant have any bratty kids. half the state has cancer anyway so why not let them have some fun. im all for it.

Thank God I live in a state that has legal medical marijuana, but that sure doesn't mean I would sign up to have a medical marijuana card or a caregivers' grow permit! After all, the federal government knows what's best, and as far as states' rights go, I believe that has been a problem as far back as the Civil War. It wouldn't be such a good idea for the state to have that kind of information about you, when at any time the state law can be superseded by the Feds and the DEA can seize any and all records held by the state - privacy laws be damned!

The only saving grace is the cops are cool about pot for the most part around here.

Wonder if smoking pot will make the people in new jersey less rude. ( no offence to sirbutlust, he's never rude) In all the times I've been to that state the only people who weren't extremely rude were the eastern europeans that had just moved there. The rest acted like I was intruding on their lives to ask a simple question. Buncha assholes if ya ask me. Maybe the pot will mellow them the fuck out.

They should legitimize it for daily therapy. These days it's difficult to get out of bed with out some kind of chemical pick me up.

If shrubbie and friends really want to keep their power they just need to legalize ALL drugs and let the chips fall.

Those of us who aren't highly medicated will be too busy looking for a fix to care if he's reading our medical records and listening to our phone calls and removing all trace of civil rights etc.

Here in beautiful Oregon, the current medical marijuana law was voted on by ballot measure and passed by a popular majority. That still does nothing to stop the "government" i.e. Gonzales and crew, from challenging the law in federal court just like they are doing with our physician's assisted suicide law, which was also a law enacted by a vote of the people. Not to mention that businesses are trying to skirt the issue of the legal marijuana when it comes to their policies on random drug testing of employees - some guy just lost his arbitration with Freightliner because he had a dirty UA for pot and he was fired for drug use, even though he was all "signed up and legal" with the state.

What a farce! Don't be naive and think just because a law is passed, it will be enforced in the way the citizens wanted it to be. Oregon is considered a "liberal blue" state, and that doesn't seem to make much difference here.

That's understandable, just because someone is on legal medication doesn't mean they should be treated any different than the other employees. Some places will fire you for drinking.

My wife who holds an Oregon CDL can have it suspended if she fails a UA. I know someone that was refused a job because he didn't pass his UA, he didn't fail it either. It came up as being too diluted to test but the job requirement was to pass one.

There was a mill worker that was fired also. Found this in a news article.

http://cannabisnews.com/news/21/thread21277.shtml

A circuit court dismissed the lawsuit, citing a provision in the state medical marijuana law that employers don't have to "accommodate the medical use of marijuana in the workplace."

Intent of the law and the lettering of the law can sometimes be open to interpretation and this seems to be the case here. Then, there's still the federal law to contend with.

To John Bong:

Interesting reply. If I may ask about your wife's CDL from Oregon, is she randomly given UA's or just in case of an accident? I agree with you that there shouldn't be any difference between medications, but do you get fired for testing positive for opiates when you are on a prescription? Granted, there are some jobs you shouldn't be doing on any medication, but with marijuana you are only high for so long, but THC stays in your system for 30 days or so I think. There is a big problem with meth here and it gets me that someone can do a bunch of crank and test clean after a week or so, but if you smoke a joint at a party on Saturday night, you're dirty for a month.

The federal government is a huge problem regarding this matter. Every time I turn around, the state of Oregon is being taken to task for some law that has been passed by popular vote of the people. The Attorney General can tie up a case in court for years by challenging any law they damn well please from the way I see it. I know California's pot clubs are constantly being busted by the DEA even though medical marijuana is legal there, too.
