Marijuana Stretching North Coast Resources
Terrain | Submitted by: Pompitous of Love
"California leads the nation in indoor and outdoor marijuana production. It is the state's largest cash crop, generating nearly $14 billion, more than grapes, vegetables, and hay combined. Moreover, production has increased ten-fold in the last 25 years. Much of that production takes place in marginal and remote areas, where ATVs power up hills to tiny outcrops, generators thunder day and night, and water trucks suck water out of tiny creeks."

"It is the state's largest cash crop, generating nearly $14 billion"

So why the fuck not legalize it? Tax the shit out of it and we could all get nice stuff from the government. Or it could finance the oncoming World War 3. Either way someone could make a fortune, and I could finally be able to find some fucking reefer.

Legalize it and control it like other vegetables.

If you grow your own, little or no regulation and you could sell it as long as you declared the income on your taxes--just as if you sold tomatoes or sweet potatoes.

If you choose to sell it commercially, you'd be subject to USDA rules and regulations regarding pesticides and fertilizers.

The prices would drop, the demand would remain the same and it would take the Plant of Joy out of the hands of the criminal element and put it in the hands of regular folks.

Bella bella bella.

If you legalize it, people will grow their own. How can you tax someone for something that they produce in their backyard or in their domiciles, unless you have a gigantic army of investigators inspecting your neighborhood, your house, and yard weekly for a plant that is nothing more than a weed. It can grow in extremely poor soil conditions and is very drought tolerable.

Does the government tax you for the vegetables you grow in your garden? Sure when you buy the seedlings but, if you harvest the seeds of one plant you don't have to buy seeds for that plant any more. How will the government then pay for all the corresponding problems linked to marijuana usage? More taxes? Sorry my hot and saucy little rotteneer, but I feel that I pay enough. What about you?

You fucking stoners, don't you know that marijuana is an
addictive and dangerous narcotic?

(now where are my doritos?)

I'd still like to know who decided that alcohol is the best
choice for the masses as a recreational drug. Idiots.

not trying to be a conspiracy theorists, well actually I am, if the californicate economy earns this much from grass cash crops, why the big effort to lock up potheads? you know, the end consumer?

is this a long term plan (thats the conspiracy part) by the big pharmaceuticals to have everything in place by weeding out (pun intended) the small players? the dudes that grow their own? and then, conveniently the politishuns who are on the take suddenly see the error of their ways and legalize the stuff?

jus' wondrin . . .

Gee. $14 BILLION! That would pay for - what? - 3 weeks of King George's war?

Of course, government figures are inflated by 10X to 100X on the pot side and under-reported by about half on the war side.

Budding Prospects: A Pastoral (Contemporary American Fiction) (Paperback)
by T.C. Boyle (Author)

"Budding Prospects" is T. Coraghessan Boyle's first novel, published in 1984. It tells the story of Felix, a 31-year-old directionless self-proclaimed quitter who joins up with a handful of ne'er-do-wells to grow marajuana in a "Little Appalachia" in California's Mendicino County. The get-rich-quick scheme soon goes awry. Felix finds himself at odds with a sadistic rural sherrif. The man who bankrolled the operation, a shady smooth-talking Marin County huckster, is not the man Felix thought he was. His hillbilly neighbors all seem to know what he's really up to on the isolated farm. Felix and his farmhand friends live in a permanent state of paranoia and fear.

Don't be fooled by the figures.

The reason why there is so much money in growing weed is that it is still a relatively rare product because of its illegality. Even if you know someone who can get you a small bag for a 20, marihuana is not as freely available as, say, tobacco. Demand exceeds supplies by far, thus keeping prices high.

If it were legal, you would see prices drop sharply. Perhaps tobacco companies would invest in the business and prices wouldn't go down as much (tobacco being a similar product, but with a waning market, while weed would give them revenues not seen in decades). But ultimately, marihuana would cost less.

What we need to do is not look at market value, but actual "agricultural" yield. How many tons of weed are produced per year? I am sure that figure is no match for California's production of grapes, grapefruits and oranges.

is there a less "green" industry than the gun/ammunition production-it is based entirely on the processing of heavy metals which are as almost as environmentally destructive as mining and processing gold & diamonds ... precious elements as it were - dump them too?
