Sand is gritty. It must really suck to drown in sand. When I was a boy, my tunnel collapsed as well, but it was only a foot high. I never tried that shit again, lol.

The boys were digging on the inland side of the dune, which separates the meandering creek's estuary from the ocean, ================== Darwinism in action. Parents were where when all this was going on? Guess we don't watch the kids anymore.

Said it before... I love stupid tourists. So, these kids dig this huge tunnel under a TREE, and nobody sees anything dangerous about that? Simple physics. Guess the "Bat Cave" wasn't such a good idea.

It's "Rottentot". ...and perhaps those dipshits in Arizone will finally have some sense and require plans and permits for playing in the sand. Seriously, DD: it's "Rotteneers", despite what Wiki may have said in the past. (you were the one that put that stupid "rotteners" entry in there, weren't you?) You see, it's a play on the Disney Magic, a common newsworthy theme here. Rotteneers. Rotteneers. Learn to spell. And stop saying "how droll".

"How much rot has a rottentot wrought if a rottentot wrought rot?" First, you must determine the amount of rot to be wrought. Then you must find the rate at which a rottentot wroughts rot. Then, obtain the time frame allowed for the rottentot to wrought rot. Only then will you find the answer.

We were in some hole in the wall down in Mexico , and while walking up a dune , couldn't get a footing , slid down , and most of the dune followed. Creepy feeling , couldn't figure out which way was up , couldn't breath , felt crushed , but we got out. If felt like I had the hell beat out me , and found sand everywhere for a week. In fact , threw up the next morning , and there was sand in it. No joke. The entire thing lasted maybe 3/4 minutes , but it felt like forever. Gave me nightmares for weeks. I can imagine what those kids went thru , except the one that died. Must have been horrifying for such a young child. Just being long winded again.

Up here in Canada we don't have sand — our beaches are all covered with snow, which like sand has a voracious appetite for small children. With summer temperatures usually hovering around 28°F (sometimes we have to wear a light sweater to the beach) the little tykes tend to freeze pretty quickly, so we have to dig fast. If we're too late, at least they're well preserved, which saves on funeral expenses.

I wonder how long it took him to suffocate? I wonder if he tried to cry for his mommy? I wonder if he held out hope for a rescue and a hug from mommy only to realize with his last dying gasp that mommy and daddy weren't coming? "Mommy and Daddy hate you and we're not going to come and dig you out because you've been a bad bad boy. In fact, Mommy and Daddy are laughing at your foolishness both for getting yourself trapped and for hoping that we'd come rescue you."

Here's more from today's paper: Child killed near Bodega Bay in sand dune collapse is identified Steve Rubenstein, Chronicle Staff Writer Tuesday, September 4, 2007 The 10-year-old boy who suffocated beneath a collapsed sand dune in Sonoma County on Sunday afternoon has been identified as Jonathon Andrew Waldrup of Tucson. He was visiting Salmon Creek Beach near Bodega Bay with his mother, grandmother, cousins and relatives as part of a holiday weekend family gathering. They had rented a nearby home for the long weekend. Jonathon died around 4:30 p.m., about an hour after the dune fell, said state park ranger Heidi Horvitz. The boy, who had been digging a tunnel with his 13-year-old cousin beneath the dune under the roots of a large cypress tree, died at the scene. The cousin, who was not as far into the tunnel when it collapsed, managed to dig himself out. Two dozen rangers, firefighters and police officers dug furiously in the sand for an hour, all in vain. Witnesses described a frantic scene in the sandy grove of cypress trees along the estuary, about 500 yards from the surf. "They had shovels, boards and blocks," said local resident Jerry Dodrill. "They were digging and digging, doing the best they could. There were fire trucks and police cars from all over the place." The boy's family waited 100 yards or so away. When rangers broke the news, they burst into tears, Dodrill said. "That ground was certainly very unstable," Dodrill said. "The slope was steep and the sand just collapsed." It was the second consecutive day that the boys had been digging and playing in the tunnel, which was about 8 feet long when the cypress tree fell over, causing the tunnel to cave in. Coincidentally, a letter published in the June 21 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine warned of the danger of "sudden death from collapsing sand holes." The letter, written by two doctors and a nurse, was based on their research, which looked at 52 fatal and nonfatal cases in the past 10 years in 12 states. "During the summer-recreation and beach season, we believe it is timely to underscore a potential but underrecognized safety risk associated with leisure activities in open-sand environments," they wrote. The victims ranged in age from 3 to 21 years, with 15 of them 10 or younger. "Typically, victims became completely submerged in the sand when the walls of the hole unexpectedly collapsed, leaving virtually no evidence of the hole or the location of the victim," they wrote. "Collapse was inadvertently triggered by a variety of circumstances, including digging, tunneling, jumping, or falling into the hole." They reported that 31 of the 52 victims died. "The risk of this event is enormously deceptive because of its association with relaxed recreational settings not generally regarded as hazardous," the letter said. "However, we believe these personal and family tragedies probably are more common than this report suggests."

Kids do dumb shit all the time. I feel sorry for him because he was 10yrs old and didn't know any better. If he had been 18+ yrs old, well the fucker should have known better. His parents may have told him it was dangerous, but how many of us actually listened to everything your parents told you? 10 yr olds have no concept of their own mortality.

Little fucker prolly deserved it. Karma can be a bitch, y'know? Or maybe it was preventative karma, like, he was gonna grow up and be a Republican or something. Kids are a real pain in the ass, and not worth half the damn trouble and heartache they cause. The parents can always have another one to replace him if they really feel the need to have another mouth to feed. And maybe name him/her "Sandy"! **LOL** People are fucking stupid, and that's pretty much why I hate 'em.
