Adult Swim: Breastfeeding in the Public Pool

"The mother, Cinira Longuinho, is asking the Ontario Human Rights Commission to investigate whether her right to breastfeed was violated. The pool owner, Ellie Karkouti, says she was concerned for the baby's health and the health of other swimmers... Unlike urine and excrement, breast milk is sterile." That last sentence, though spoken by a doctor, is almost certainly false.

Well I have sat in a lounger and breast fed one of the kids. But I was lounging and had a towel draped so no one could see. I don't think I would have breast fed whichever kid it was in the actual pool. Do you know how many people pee in the pool? And breast feeding a 20 month old. Isn't that a bit extreme?

I would think if you were going to breastfeed your child when you'd been in a public pool you would want to clean your breast before popping it into your gets mouth. Pools are not only full of urine but all the other effluvia that accumulates on the human body. Also, at 20 months, it's time to wean the little sucker.

Wouldn't this be akin to drinking a milkshake underwater? And I recall a water park near Atlanta where several children became ill with ecoli because one of the tikes had diarrhea. Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

This is stupid. Why would a mother want a baby to inadvertently suck in some chlorinated water while breast feeding in a pool? Also why the fuck can't you wait to feed your kid? After all, you're in the pool, enjoy yourself and swim.

20 months is a bit old, but nowhere near as bad as one of my co-workers wife breast feeding her FIVE year old boy...by the pool...at the summer company party...at the company Vice President's home... I do not work with normal people.

Its been pointed out a couple of times above you that feeding a child in a pool is not that swift an idea. Barring the whole chlorine water washing down junior's lunch, there's the mass of human waste in the water to contend with. As to doing a "natural thing" in public, taking a shit is also very natural, but I have no desire to watch someone else do that in public either. Have some fucking discretion about what you do, and where you do it, you cunt-whistle.

Yea from one standpoint it does seem kind of extreme, why continue to offer your kid the boob when he can eat real food? But the biggest push for extended breastfeeding appears to be immunological for health as well as nutritionally supplimental and on those grounds they kind of have a point. Any illness you encounter while breastfeeding means that you pass on the antibodies to your kid, which helps keep the little bugger healthy and out of the hospital. Take chicken pox, for example. Because herpes simplex type viruses never disappear from the body, they merely go into remission (which is why you can get coldsores and shingles), your body is always producing the antibody to keep it down. So if you've had chicken pox as a kid, as long as you're breastfeeding, you're protecting your kid. There's been a lot of studies lately that are showing that the hospital clean environment Lysol would ideally like us to purchase from them is actually bad for us in the long run. This is just the breastfeeding equivalent of letting your kid play in the dirt as nature intended. Also interesting to note... not so long ago breastfeeding was considered a backward and rather barbaric thing to do at all!

as a lifeguard. that is pretty disggusting. we dont allow eating in the pool or on the pool deck, and we wont make an excpetion for babies, they are also eating when they are being breastfed. It is unsanitary for the rest of the patons, knowingly letting a persons bodily fluid into the pool. Also, baby spitup is like vomit, which is a pool foul whixh requires chemicals and a waiting period before bathers are allowed back in
