BBC | Submitted by: anonymous
"At least 14 people, 10 of them children, were killed when a roof collapsed at a swimming pool in the Urals region of Russia, officials say." ... '14 people, 10 of them children' and further down the article '14 dead, of whom four were said to be women'. Good old BBC and it's gone-down-with-the-Titanic making distinctions between women and children and, you know, the others.
And I'm female myself.

"A similar collapse at a water park in Moscow in February 2004 left 28 dead"

Apparently, they didn't learn their lesson and try to prevent it from happening again elsewhere.

Well, you know what they say, "There may be snow on the roof, but there's bound to be dead women and children in the pool!"

Okay, so why's the article title 9 people died if it was really 14 that died? Or am I too tired and am missing the joke?

IMO it was faulty engineering/architecture. A well constructed concrete structure should be well able to withstand the added weight of snow. I wonder if they built it in the summer, & therefore didn't think of snow as being a factor? Anyway, a nice rotten story, & just in time for the Holidays.

What can be said? Depending on when it was built this was either the result of Soviet efficiency or Russian corruption. Plus ca change...

Ah, some former-future-olympian probably got tired of all that boring swimming and decided to go skiing, but didn't have the funds to make it all the way to the Urals.
