And I bet you that everyone that ever rides on any freaky rides takes risks of their own. I mean come on, like it's wise to drive around the city holding up and smoking a big fat fucking bowl, because after all, every cop rides around in regular black and white cars that say POLICE on them. Fucking sick of the fucking hype about people getting fucked up on these fucking rides. Boo fucking hoo. Fuck. I still fucking hate cops.

All of the other deaths happened when kids either on purpose, or by accident, got out of their safety harnesses. This was a woman, who remained restrained. So, what did her in? Maybe she had a heart attack?
I really have to laugh at the official response:"Add more seat belting".

No disagreement here Auldy, but could it be that the fox is guarding the
hen house so to speak. You had mentioned in the past that when you were a
carny that the safety regulations were tight. Since there were more than
one company that would inspect the rides and attractions. (competition)
Walt Disney World (UGH!) has their own police force.

And the thing is I LOVE ROLLER-COASTERS and even with all the safety straps
and bars, etc. There have been many a time I felt that I was going to fly
out of the seat when the negative Gs get ya. And I am 5'7 and a normal
weight, can't imagine a little person: child or otherwise dealing with
these negative G-forces.

This "deadly history" is bullshit.

You had a 7 yr old brat who got herself out of the restraints after the ride started, you have another brat on a different ride, and a middle aged retard drowning himself.

Then you have this 20-something gal who somehow got out of her restraints.

There is nothing wrong with these rides, but plenty wrong with these riders.

First, I have to say, I love rye playland. When I was growing up there were always stories of people dying there, like choking on gum, getting decaptated by standing up on the dragon coaster, shit like that.

The latest story is that the chick worked on the ride, and had done so for years. She was getting people into their seats or something, when the BOOTH OPERATOR STARTED THE RIDE!

WHOOPS!

And I still love the story of the little shit who managed to kill himself in the old mill (the 'it's a small world' of playland).

HAHAHA!

Playland is cool. and the Mind Scrambler is like the best ride there.

Just pointing out a ref. in the story, that there was a 43 year old male who drowned himself in the lake there...

"Friday's accident marked the fourth fatality in as many years at the county-owned Playland, a National Historic Landmark that opened in 1928. After the Mind Scrambler accident in 2004, a 7-year-old boy was killed the following year when he climbed out of his boat ride and fell, according to investigators. A 43-year-old man drowned after wading into a lake at the park on July 4, 2006."

Disney rules everything in Florida that deals with regulating amusements. They try very hard to stifle even the smallest of competition. I'm sure Six Flags tries the same in other states.

There are places, I forget where, where inspectors are contracted, by the state, from one company, to inspect their competitors rides. It really works out well.

I don't think this was "rider error" at all. Two different scenarios are being reported, and I'm going to trust the NY sources over the Toronto Star!

Early on- before this Totonto Star article, I read that she was just done changing shifts with the new operator, and she went to buckle some latecomers in, and the *new* operator started the ride up without making sure she was clear.

This article has since been updated, but all along, the NY news reported that she was leaving her shift and "helping out" the new operator by checking riders' harnesses, when HE started the ride.

http://www.myfoxny.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=3643131&version=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

"Garin was finishing up her shift on the Mind Scrambler, a spider-arm-shaped attraction that spins passengers around in two-seat cars, when she continued to load on a few new riders before heading home, said park spokesman Peter Tartaglia.
As the last passengers were strapped into their seats, impatient riders began shouting "Come on, start the ride," said Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano. The ride's new operator, his view apparently blocked by a high back on the ride's seat, started the Mind Scrambler with Garin kneeling on a seat bench, Spano said.
According to Tartaglia, the ride's operator noticed Garin and shut the attraction down within 20 seconds. But Garin, who started working at the park when she was 14, was already ejected from the ride and killed."

ahh-so. she was an employee still strapping people in when a second employee started the ride which immediately threw the first girl to her death. not a random rider or a system failure; human error

I like the "Paint Mixer" and the "Money Shaker".

The first is a giant paint can. You cram it full of riders and put the lid on and give it a good 5 minute shake.

The second is a conventional suspended coaster that freezes the riders upside down and shakes the loose money out of their pockets.

It's funny, on the road, ride help and game help often don't get along. Game help call the ride guys stupid, and the ride guys call the game guys thieves. During one discussion, I was accused of being deceptive, and working "too strong".

I had to remind him that I only "took" money that was freely handed to me, but he was the one who actually held people upside down and shook the money out of their pockets (he was the Kamikaze foreman). I also pointed out that we game agents were the only carnies out there who didn't spend all day making people puke.

He never brought the subject up again.

We have this ride down here at the jersey shore. I used to ride it all the time when I was younger. It is a lot of fun. This probably we stop me from going on it. I have lived in NJ (at the shore) for most of my life and have been on these rides since I was 5 or 6. I can't imagine what would make anyone - even a 7 year old try and get out of the restraint. I rode some scary rides when I was that age and getting out of the seat never entered my mind, as I recall.

Yeah, she was actually working that ride the last time someone got killed on it. He was in the control booth and couldn't see her bending over to belt someone in when he started it.

I try to keep that in mind, but that france first...etc...is driving me nuts. It's a short drive to be sure. (Actually it's only to the end of the driveway, if that far).

As for the story...I rode a ride one time called the Hammerhead. It was two bullet shaped cars, where there are two sets of 2 seats, sitting back to back on each end of the bullet shaped car. They are surrounded by a cage. The two arms swing the bullets back and forth...until they finally flip you over...and also your car spins around. It used to be my favorite ride as a kid at the carnivals. That is intil I was 14, and they stopped the car before the ride was over, like within the first few swings. They made us get out, and we stepped out and the car just went PLUNK down on the ground, off of the arm. Apparently it lost some part..and the operator saw if fall. I haven't ridden it since. LOL.

A few years ago, at Lake Compounce here in CT, a worker was killed in the same type of ride (a Scrambler in a dark room) in the same way-some other bozo turned on the ride while he was inside.

Link: http://www.rideaccidents.com/1999.html#aug21

Text:
(Saturday, August 21, 1999) - A 16-year-old boy died Saturday from injuries he suffered at Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol, Connecticut. On Friday, the boy was working as a ride attendant on the Tornado, a spinning ride more commonly known as the Scrambler. The accident happened when the boy stepped onto the ride before it had come to a complete stop. His legs got caught underneath the ride and he was dragged until the operator activated the emergency stop. The boy was left pinned underneath the ride from the waist down.

Firefighters used inflatable devices to lift the ride off of the victim. After the boy was freed, he was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. His injuries included a head wound and broken bones, in addition to possible broken arms, dislocated shoulders, and multiple internal injuries.

The state fire marshal inspected the ride and determined that it did not malfunction. Park officials had planned to operate the ride Saturday, but have decided not to, out of respect for the victim.
