It do get a tad warm here in the desert. Besides the dogs, a baby was also roasted when left in a vehicle for a couple of hours, by accident. The temp in a vehicle goes up to 125, in about 20 minutes, and it doesn't stop there. After a couple of hours, it will reach about 150, unless one uses sun shades, in which case it will only go up to 149.

I (accidentally!) killed an English bulldog once- I left him in the outdoor run at a vet clinic in Hawaii for about 3 hours- it wasn't even all that hot. He had serious respiratory issues, as they all do... :( The puppy-brother of a Doberman we had a long time ago died outside after knocking over his water bucket- (at the breeder's home, not ours!) doesn't take puppies long in Texas summer.

this is sorta how my dog died. My son(4yr old at the time) went to get a toy out of the pick up and the dog followed him out the door. He come's back in the house but I didn't notice the dog was still gone. A couple hours latter I started looking for her, she wasn't in the house any where. So I told my son lets get in the truck and go look for her. Well we found her. She was in the truck, south texas heat, worst day I've had in a long time. Poor dog I loved that dog, and still do, her name was cocamo. probly one of the worst ways to die...I don't want to talk about it any more...sorry

Maybe they should really leave the welfare checks to those with veterinary training: Police check on a dog; find it "healthy". "A few hours later", humane society workers check on the same dog; find it deceased. Something tells me the cops missed some warning signs.

I was under the mistaken impression for the longest time that long-haired dogs should be clipped (really short) in hot weather so they wouldn't get hot. Well, I was thinking like a human. Longer fur helps insulate the dog from the heat. Since a dog doesn't sweat, their skin doesn't need to be unobstructed for sweat to evaporate. Insulates them from the heat in hot weather and from cold in cold weather. As long as their panting isn't impaired in some way then they should be ok unless it's equal to or hotter than their core body temperature of 101F. And for pity's sake, keep them properly hydrated like a human. After all, dogs are humans, too. I'm sure all of you already know this so nevermind.

's sort of how my collie died last month. Came home and found her comatose or braindead (probably the latter, I guess) in the garden. She was really old, though, and the vet who put her down said she had just fallen asleep in the shade and not woken up when the sun came out. We left her out on her own all day many, many times, and I just didn't think anything of it. Poor Molly. She was a good dog. Um. Anyway, how in the FUCK does dehydration make your body fall apart? Did they disintegrate or turn into dust or what?
