Pirates Accidentally Try To Seize French Navy Ship

Pirates wearing eye patch on wrong eye? "The French Navy said they seized 11 pirates Sunday after they apparently mistook a French military vessel for a commercial ship and made a run at it... The pirates, who had a mother ship as well as the two assault boats, are being held for questioning on the Nivose, Prazuck said."

Well you really can't blame the skinny apes for trying. They have no reason not to hijack a ship. If they're caught they are held long enough to have their weapons confiscated and set free to try another day, No consequences.

I read in the French news that the Nivose detect pirates in the distance and the Captain turned the ship to sail into the sun so that it was hard for the pirates to see clear the ship. Then when they got to a distance they turned and surprise them. Another victory for France!

Well done to France for a change....if these nig-nogs had half a brain they might be slightly menacing. I briefly read some convoluted legalistic bullshit explaining why Western merchant vessels must apparently be largely unarmed (I'm sure the Skipper and Mate have sidearms). Someone post a brief primer. Haven't these assholes ever heard of Sir Francis Drake?

From what I've read they use captured fishing boats as mother ships and send out skiffs from those to board the target ship. The fishing boats probably all have radar and gps but still nothing a few .50 rounds couldn't take care of.

Torpedos, shmedos. I think it'd be far cheaper and way more entertaining to use a trebuchet and a pile of cinderblocks to sink pirate vessels. They could make a reality tv show about it. I'd watch it.

There is nothing in the pirate's inventory worthy of a modern torpedo, either in size or value. An M2 .50 machine gun has a longer range than the RPG's that are the pirate's only heavy weapons at this point, and a few bursts would take apart one of those little attack boats. For overkill, maybe go up to a 3" gun for the "mother ship". I think that their is PLENTY of maritime legal precedent on dealing with pirates, going back to before the Roman empire. And I don't think it requires them to be taken back to shore for a trial.

Unemployment in Somalia is around 90%, I shit you not. The average per capita income is somewhere around $400/year. Again, I shit you not. COuntries are paying ransom for their vessels and the average pirate can make $10,000 for one vessel. That is enough to be set for life in that hellhole. The kids (and we are talking teenagers and young adults here) have NO incentive to not try pirating in Somalia. There is one solution, and only one: stop paying ransom. period. Shoot the fuckers out of the water and if they do capture a boat, blow IT out of the water as soon as the crew loses control of the vessel.

Just a quick point of fact here, Jean take note, France had effectively withdrew from NATO by '59 under de Gaulle. While remaining for the most part in solidarity, their nuclear stance as well as internal socialist policies kept them from being fully intergratable. Under the new head frog Sarkozy France has now rejoined NATO as a full member. So Jean, learn more about France before you try to defend it.
