Big Brother: Government Ramps Up DNA Collections

"Immigration and civil liberties groups condemned a new U.S. government policy to collect DNA samples from all noncitizens detained by authorities and all people arrested for federal crimes... The new Justice Department rule, published Wednesday and effective Jan. 9, dramatically expands a federal law enforcement database of genetic identifiers, which is now limited to storing information about convicted criminals and arrestees from 13 states."

It starts with the dredges of society, then it moves to misdemeanors, then to when you get a parking ticket, then to checkpoints, then to whenever they damn well feel like it...all under the penalty of jail (and DNA sampling) if you refuse. Get it?

Stud, wait until pretty much EVERYTHING becomes a Federal Crime. The ongoing federalization of our military, police, transportation, communication, and infrastructure is nearing completion. This is the 'change' Obama is offering us...the seamless conversion to an authoritarian socialist state. Criticizing the government will be a federal crime. Growing your own food, a federal crime. DNA is very different from a fingerprint or photo in a number of ways. Your DNA is full of your complete genetic information, including predispositions to many diseases, socially significant factors such as skin color, everything. When the police seize your genetic sample, they can share it with anybody they want to. Any other government agency, private firm, anybody. Fingerprints are still the most quick, reliable, and inexpensive means of identifying a person. They give no information other that the exact identity of the individual. They are good enough already. The whole business is just another step in the process of gateway legislation for collecting everyone's DNA when they are born. Beginning with the undesirables and expanding the net until it covers everybody is standard practice when applying new, unwanted powers of government. That's why it's sort of a big deal.

Mind you, avoiding leaving your fingerprints at the scene of a crime is a relatively easy task while making sure that you don't drop any DNA is almost impossible. Still, why should anyone help the police. I mean, it's not like they were trying to stop people stealing your possessions or anything important. No, let's make their job as impossible as we can, then we can all sit and moan about how inefficient they are.
