historical injuctions against usury stemmed from a different view of money than we have today. through medieval times there was no concept of capital, or of the power of investment; a person's money sat uselessly in a strongbox until the rare occasion that they bought something with cash. in that context, to charge your neighbor interest for a loan of money would be as pettily uncharitable as charging him to use your saddle if you had no horse anyway.

Back in the day, money was perceived differently (read: accurately)

These days, we have thousands of abstract rationalizations for the rich man's extortion of the other 95% of the population of the planet.

Trouble is, an unchecked merchant class can't govern worth a crap, even as everything about their worldview reinforces their delusions of superiority, their world continues to fall apart around them. The internal logic of the system destroys the middle class that created it.

It's enough to make you nostalgic for absolute monarchies where the perverted ego-trips of individual tyrants at least gave society SOME purpose beyond ritualized greed.

Ahhh, Those were the days ... Napoleon marching on Moscow just because ... Hitler diverting resources from the war to research black magic. Alexander the Great wasn't even sure WHY he was marching east, but anything's better than capitalism folks. True story.
