Abstinence Pledges Will Have Sex, But Unsafely
Washington Post | Submitted by: onthemac
Law of unintended consequences, although anyone with half a brain already knew this would happen: "Teenagers who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are just as likely to have premarital sex as those who do not promise abstinence and are significantly less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do, according to a study released today."

I am so tired of 'Good Catholics' telling me how AIDS, Clap and pregnancy are a must, to punish sinners as they say.... and telling me they'll do anything to make sure these consequences happen. That's nuts.

My Dad lives in a town with a strong "Christian Science" invader presence since it's a "Hippie" hang out. A lot of "Good Christians" choose to live there to try to take over the government and turn it into a shithole like the rest of the US is sliding to. Well, he filled in for a vacationing gym teacher and dealt with "Cheerleader shitty pants"... A nice young lady who'd really be every boys dream, blonde blue eyed pretty, good student and cheerleader. Except shit oozed out of her pants, especially sitting on another girl's hand during practice. Her ex girlfriend would get a stinky oozy hand and really hate her, so instead of being the school starlet she was mocked lower than the worst of nerds and trench coat mafia wanna-be's. Know why? Stones. So, just take medicine or get an operation, right? Wrong. Christian Science, they wanted to pray the stones away. Well, he just slipped her some medicine the doctor gave him. And why I brought this up? Well, though stones in teenagers happen, they are rare. There are two fucked up things associated with "Good Christians" that caused this. 1. Megavitamins. "Good Chrisitans" are recently on a health kick fashion. It's possible for stones to form from excessive calcium. -and- 2. Anal sex. A lot of "Good Christians" do "Secondary" sex so they can remain virgins... While oral and anal sex are unlikely to cause pregnancy, they are more likely to spread V.D., especially when protection is not used. And Anal sex is linked to this. Dad was adamant it wasn't #2, and he didn't f*ck her either since he is loyal to his wife. His second, and infidelity had nothing to do with divorcing mom, either, he's pretty conservative for a hippie.

I know this to be true. When I was a kid I was all "Miss.I'm going to stay a virgin till marriage!" then a few years pass... & I did the deed w/o a ring & w/o protection! Also the fact that I was going into funeral services made me change my mind, I don't think anyone wants to die w/o ever getting laid!

Have some shame andro. I hope the kids don't make the mistake I've made & use protection, I'm very lucky I never caught anything. You think a person going into funeral services wouldn't be so careless.

The virginity pledge is just another excuse for bad parenting. Just get that promise out of your teens and end of discussion. No more pain in the ass awkward questions or uncomfortable conversations. No need to bother with any more guidance or education. Just sit your pious ass right up in the first pew, smug in the knowledge that your kids are alright. And when they get in trouble, you don't even have to get down off your self-righteous high horse to rub their noses in their old pledge. Made to order for shitty parents.

Lorax, AMEN to that! In the old days, they kept the kids ignorant, and when they showed up pregnant they'd say "It's your fault because you did something DISGUSTING!" (So very disgusting that we couldn't ever talk about it) Nowadays it's kind of hard to pretend that sex feels disgusting. So the parents use the Pledge, a new escape from reality and a new way to blame the kids.

That's the other crock about the abstinence until married concept: where does that leave lifelong bachelors, old maids and spinsters? These abstinence pushers never once got their F on outside of the confines of marriage? What happens if they divorce, does anyone expect them to never hit it again until they marry again.

Why am I not surprised about two things: 1) the fact that ass-piracy was never even once mentioned in the article, even though it's plain that chastity-pledge types use the back door more than similar non-chastity types... and 2) that at least two posters here (so far) would make that obvious connection. We need more rotteneers at Hopkins, plain and simple.

And Anal sex is linked to this. ***************** That reminds me of a pretty good laugh I had a few weeks ago. While goofing around on the internet, I came across the concept of "technical virginity". That is, only vaginal intercourse counts for virginity purposes so kids can do all sorts of things sexually and still be virgins as long as a penis doesn't enter a vagina. It really made my day to realize I'll be a 40 year-old virgin soon despite all the blow jobs and hand jobs I exchanged when I was a callow youth. I suddenly felt so pure and innocent.

>>The findings are reigniting the debate about the effectiveness of abstinence-focused sexual education just as Congress and the new Obama administration are about to reconsider the more than $176 million in annual funding for such programs. << probably one of Bush's "faith based initiatives" >>"This study came about because somebody who decides to take a virginity pledge tends to be different from the average American teenager. The pledgers tend to be more religious. They tend to be more conservative.<< Yep, and what would religeous/conservative mom and dad say if their kid was the only kid in church that didn't wear one of those rings?

My experience through friends who have been virgins when married is that eventually thier hsband uses the line "no one else would have you" and they are insecure about thier sexual attractiveness. My friends with the background of sexual growth and self explotration when that line gets used, kicks his arese and says well plenty wanted me before and planety still will

...and people wonder why the U.S. has the highest teen pregnancy and STD rates in the developed world. The whole abstinence thing ist just the tip of the iceberg and emblematic of a culture that has completely warped views on (teenage) sexuality. The game abstinence proponents are in is to reduce STDs and teen pregnancies by instilling fear and guilt into teenagers. They believe by scaring them into abstinence with lies, half-truths and tales about God's impending wrath, they will successfully tackle the actual problem. But guess what, kids are still f*cking, and as the report proves again, when the pledgers do, they have no clue about safe sex, let alone contraception. Just look at what happens in other countries - much of Europe as well as Canada, for example. Young people are educated about the potential pitfalls of sexual activity with a pro-active, affirmative approach. People having sex is not seen as the problem, but making ill-informed decisions is. Comprehensive sex ed is compulsory in most European schools, and governments work closely with health authorities and healthcare providers to spread the message on what constitutes "safe" sex. There is no moralizing "head in the sand" movement like the abstinence crowd in the US. Pre- or extramarital sex is seen as a health issue, not a moral one. And the figures speak for themselves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_incidence_of_teenage_pregnancy

This is just another example of how ass backwards the united states of dumbfuckistan is when it comes to educating our youth on sex. The Bush years was only successful in using faith based programs, thinking it would get kids to not have premarital sex, only for the opposite to happen. I remembered watching a tv program a few years back when a medium sized Texas town that boasted about their abstinence only program, but was revealed to be the chlamydia capitol of that state. When will parents wake up and realize that this approach is not working? When they're up to their necks in unwanted pregnancies and std infections? The only way for it to work is to give proper information on contraception and safer sex practices.

Even then it's a bit of a tough call. Look at how many trailer parks and areas of 'section 8' housing is fuckin oblivious to this shit. I don't get it. It's counter intuitive. If you've taken a pledge to "remain a virgin", then wouldn't you WANT to use protection when you broke your promise, so no one would find out? I mean, when you show up preggars the secret's out. You're name ain't Mary and your momma ain't gonna believe any s**t about a Holy Birth. Wow, the next generation really is dumbed down.
