Parents complain about dirty book
Houston Courier | Submitted by: anonymous
"The book had a bunch of very bad language in it," Diana Verm said. "It shouldn't be in there because it's offending people. ... If they can't find a book that uses clean words, they shouldn't have a book at all." ... "It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read Fahrenheit 451. "The words don't need to be brought out in class. I want to get the book taken out of the class." ... "Alton Verm's request to ban Fahrenheit 451 came during the 25th annual Banned Books Week."

There is just to much irony to this story. "His 15-year-old daughter Diana, a CCHS sophomore, came to him Sept. 21 with her reservations about reading the book because of its language." His daughter must be a real douchebag to be anti-cursing at the age of 15. I can't remember anyone at that age who did not find literature strewn with curses as anything other than cool. If anything, the curses was what kept a majority of the kids in the class reading the book. I do not understand what universe these people are apart of. It sort of frustrates me that their vote counts as much as mine. Sigh.

Oh please tell me this is a joke. Come on, this cant be real the irony is just waaay to fucking much. The fates just don't hand out little gems like this. Once again I state that we need some serious chlorine tablets in the gene pool. Before you know it the only books kids are going to be able to read is the autobiography of G.W Bush. Written Dr Seuss style.

It should be banned for being one of the most overrated and mind numbingly boring excuses for literature ever written. Bradbury had cool ideas, he just couldn't write them down in a entertaining way.

I haven't read F451 in years and I do have a great deal of Bradbury on my shelf that I read through once in a while. I don't recall any bad language in F451 and know that Bradbury is a great craftsman who really doesn't need to use "bad language". I want to see what words these people find offensive and they should be made to demonstrate what is offensive to these students. Then we can judge how redneck they really are. Until then, they are just mildly redneck.

My god, I read that book before I was 15 and understood the message it sends, I've also read 1984 and Brave New World, not to mention a multitude of others in that genre. Nothing wrong with the message they send or the real way in which it's presented. I guess this assbag would go along nicely in the world of Guy Montag now wouldn't he? Dipshit moron.

While I have no problem labeling these inbred, hillbilly, closed-minded douchebags I do respect their right not to have to read certain material. I also support their right to raise another ignorant, inbred, hillbilly, closed-minded douchebag to the age of 18. If they want to do report in school on alternate material they should be given that opportunity, just as others should have the right to read classic literature without being deprived the right to do so by Billy jo bob and Martha anne sue's church bonfire fuel appropriation board.

They totally schemed this shit out in their basement to pull one over on the media and the American people. Hahahahahaha SUCKERS. Raygun: Well said! Although, when it comes to education I believe the majority should pretty much rule and if someone has a big problem with the way the public schools do things then theyyou'll need to send them to a private school or home school them. Banning books is ridiculous as most people would agree, but I for one am so f#$@% sick of the same trash being forced down the throats of highschoolers for the past 30 years. Fahrenheit 451, any Ann Rand book, 1984, catch 22... Don't CONFORM, the government is BAD, everyone read the same f@#$ books so you can become moron conspiracy nuts. Know what they need to teach in highschool, critical thinking. Teach kids to analyze and think critically of everything that is put in front of them. That way they can read virtually any book and pick out ideas or lessons that reflect reality. This may be a very ironic story but hardly rotten.

What are they afraid of? My theory is that parents want their children angelic, sweet, demur, obedient...while THEY have to deal with them. Then these so- called "obedient" kids grow up, are unleashed in the "real" world. They can't handle it. They go nuts...rape, rob, prostitutes themselves, get knocked up, kill. Then you see poor momma crying in the camera, "But he/she was always such a GOOD boy/girl!" just to name a few. but you don't see me standing on some pedestal all horny to get my picture in paper so I will have something to show a band of sheep who will "ooooo" and "ahhhh" all full of doe-eyed awe and fawn over me. What the fuck is going on with people's egos nowadays? Perhaps I am only marinating in my apathy. The point is, nobody would back my particular platform if I started soap-boxing. Why does this dude think his opinion trumps all others? Aren't Christains supposed to be humble, speak thier minds and simply adhere to thier beliefs in private or congregation? Isn't that what this whole experiment of a "liberal democracy" is supposed to be about? The fact that we all have the inherient birthright to speak out against what we consider an outrage and to have what you have to say protected by the Consititution. Bradbury spoke out against totalitarianism. What exactly is this Alton Verm guy really standing for? I bet this ass-sponge even condsiers himself "American". People like this guy have no place in any sort of progressive society at all. Being a militant moralist is no better than being a militant racist. If you wanna be a moralist or a racist, I have no qualms with that at all. Just keep it to your own and don't impose it onto other people. Sorry, I had to split up that post. Did these fuckwits ever take a good look at the Bible? The Bible features and/or discusses rather prominently in some sections: - adultery - murder - incest - sodomy - genocide - violence - masturbation To my knowledge, "Fahrenheit" doesn't condone smoking, drinking and other vices, just like the Bible doesn't condone the above points. But hey, it's the Bible, and may God (if there is one) strike me dead for even writing a post like this...

I don't think it's that easy. Banning books (and art, by the way!) is a form of cultural mind control. These people aren't just worried about the ideas that a novel like this will instill in the minds of their young - their objective is to declare war on anything that is against their narrow-minded beliefs, in an effort to reeducate everybody else. It's the next best thing to totalitarianism.

Why on earth do these people send their daughter off to government schools every morning if they don't want her to be exposed to these sorts of things? There must be plenty of Christian schools they could send her to. Not only are they cheapskates for taking the easy way out on their daughter's education but then they want to pull something like this. I see this as an excellent reason for school voucher programs, so nutty parents like this can just get the hell away from everyone else and form up into their own nutty schools. If people like this all want to self-segregate into their own communities with such prudish standards, that's certainly their right. Kind of like gay people self-segregating in West Hollywood so that they can set their own community standards. Kind of like Amish forming up into their own communities, too. That's why we have states instead of one big polyglot of one-size-fits-all government. (At least in the USA -- for now)

Either motive is equally suspect in this backwater. Whoever said you're either a god-fearing Baptist or a pariah hit the nail on the head. I would add one category, tho. You're either a god-fearing Baptist, a pariah, or a methhead...or a combination of the three. Me...I'm squarely in the pariah camp because I want little to do with the other two.

This story is probably fake - it's far too perfectly rotten. Well, I just hope it's fake. Either way, it strikes a chord. I just got back from visiting my mom and stepdad in Northern Florida. They live in a tiny town, closest big(?) city is Gainesville. I couldn't believe how many people there make racist and sexist remarks. I'm white, from San Francisco & I tend to be attracted to 'non-white' guys. I went out for dinner one night with the parents' friends and I heard 'nigger' far too many times. My current partner is Japanese and I was waiting to hear 'nip.' If any of the folks at that table knew I've loved two black men, they would have shit. I imagine if they met my boyfriend, they'd have lumped him in as a 'chink'. I don't know why, at 40 years old, I continue to be surprised by peoples' ugliness. If this F451 story is true, I really pity this so-called country.

Then you grew up, became tall and reached the age for fine ornaments; your breasts were formed and your hair had grown. Yet you were naked and bare. When I was in high school, my AP literature class ran into this sort of blockade with some books. My teacher got around it in a most clever fashion: we read a lot of Thomas Hardy, and when we got home our parents saw the blurb about Hardy, "One of the most prolific poets and authors of Victorian England...." and delved no further. Has anyone else here actually read any Hardy? Still my favorite author - Tess of the d'Urbervilles, where Tess gets raped (or maybe is willing, we will never know), has a stillborn baby, all before she turns 14, and that's only the first chapter; Mayor of Casterbridge, where this guy gets piss-ass drunk and sells (or bets away, I can't remember, it's been quite a while) his wife and infant daughter (again, this happens in the first few pages); or Jude the Obscure, which was viciously reviewed by all those Victorians for its exquisitely explicit sexual scenes, and the degree to which the antagonist used sex as a weapon against Jude. We also read quite a bit of Shakespeare "How now do you speak of country (cunt-ry) matters, Ophelia?" Fahrenheit 451 was one of the tamer selections, I recall. The ideas and the concept of such a type of fear were quite graphic, but that's not something that's going to give anyone a hard on, not even that fucking cow of a cunt. Fuck that. Freedom of speech, it must be defended, to the death (as Voltaire would say - speaking of graphic novels...)! NO art should be censored, NO novel should be censored or banned - this isn't kazakhstan, where pamphlets on "Voting and Democracy" are burned, and this isn't Nazi Germany! These fucking saggy-ass bags are free to think and read as they choose, but they have no right to ban or call for a ban on ANYTHING. It's small town syndrome - everybody in town thinks the exact same way, so probably everybody in the world thinks the same way too. They probably think that they are doing the world a great favor, and jesus will reward them once they get to heaven. Although I would be down for a ban on cops, and on student loan debt too.

Yes, I too am in shock due to the large mass of irony displayed here. The above poster was spot on about the Martian Chronicles story, but I do believe it is titled "Usher 2". " We had our little libraries,a few private citizens, until you sent your men around with torches and burned them...Just as you put a stake through the heart of Halloween and told your film makers that if they made anything at all they would have to make and re-make Earnest Hemingway. Oh realism! Oh, here, oh how, oh Hell!" And another of my favories for good measure "Something Wicked this way Comes" " And so you make hay, till soil, coil rope, until the day when your'e the worst fool of all and shout "HELP!" That's when the carnival comes for you, with an easy smile and an answer to all your woes. Shake any tree, it rains jackasses! A rich harvest of ninnies to fuel the fires. They tempt you with your petty desires in one hand and SCARE you into obedience with Nothing in the other hand, the END on display. Send your kid to a private Christian school where your kid can be kept in a box with all the other retarded people until real society gets to smack them in the face like a ton of bricks when they realize that EVERYBODY IN THE DAMN WORLD CURSES. It's a good, solid classic peice of literature. But, on the other hand, this kid is most likely not going on to college (where she would be exposed to worse horrors, like more required reading with curse words and...gasp...logic...), so yeah....let her skip the book. After all, I'll need somebody to cook up my fries at McDonalds or mop up the puke at my future kids' schools and I'm sure an idiot that won't read a book because they're offended by a written four letter word will fit the job description perfectly. Oh yeah. The bible says "ass", "harlot", "bitch", and discusses prostitution and the selling of extremely underage girls to older rich men for pleasure and profit. Wholesome reading there. fucking cow of a cunt That's a good insult... would it be better to call her the cunt of a fucking cow? Then she is implicitly covered in bull spooge, also. I remember in high school we put on the play Carousel. Sugar-sweet little Rogers and Hammerstein musical: broke-ass boy meets naive girl, girl marries boy before confronting harsh realities of life, boy knocks girl up, boy slaps girl around, boy dies in commision of crime, angel returns from the dead to slap kid around. A local religious group wrote in to protest the play. Not about the spousal abuse, not even about the dubious theology behind an abusive angel, but because one of the characters says "Hell." Once. The snake-handlers complained that "teachers should not be putting that kind of words in our children's mouths." Eesh.

It should be banned for being one of the most overrated and mind numbingly boring excuses for literature ever written. Bradbury had cool ideas, he just couldn't write them down in a entertaining way. I read recently in the book 'The United States of Walmart', that in the first week of Jon Stewart's 'America: The Book' being sold in Walmart stores, it was pulled from shelves because one page featured depictions of the chief justices nude, while they still feature a Christian novel in which it graphically describes non Christian's entering hell. i.e. their feet suddenly melting to the thousand degree floor, their limbs being ripped off by demons, etc. Basically, discriminating a group of people and subjecting them to horrific violence is more acceptable than a nude body. Walmart also only recently pulled 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion', an extremist anti-semetic propoganda book. Walmart said they kept the book because "If what it says is true, it makes you re-evaluate society." This isn't completely on topic, but you can see the connection, beign that these fat retards trying to ban F. 451 and the fat cats at Walmart and virtually the same people, just with salary differences.

Isn't ironic that parents wants to ban a book about the downfall of a government that started by banning books? It's not about language. It's the fact that 451 stands there with other works like 1984 and Animal Farm. The books being thrown out of the school libraries are the exact same ones that were origonally banned back in the 50's and 60's. All of them have something to do with human rights issues.
