Torture is Unamerican. Of course it happens whether it is "allowed" or not but not with the wanton brazeness of this administration. Bush and Gonzalez have dragged my fine country through the mud. Enough torture - that's what desperate cowards and terrorists do. Plus, an interesting point no one brings up - if we violate Geneva Convention laws we put our own soldiers at much higher risk. Think about it - how much more inclined is someone going to be to torture one of soldiers if they have seen some pictures of what is going on with the PUCS? If not for human decency then at least for our own soldiers.

It fits this administration, a little too late. Guess they didn't know that the top brass is suppose to condemn all torture, that way when the grunts act out their aggressions on the prisoners (which is going to happen no matter what country's army) the brass stays clean. The only problem I have with the torture that was going on, was that most of the crap reported by the media amounted to pranks and poor treatment. They overhyped the naked pyramid, the underwear on the head thing, and that chick laughing at the guy's nakedness. Yeah, there was more to it than that, but that's what the media focused on, the beatings and shit only got a brief mention.

Nice to see both sides of the Senate agreeing on something, even if it is the shiftiness of the Commander-in-Chief. "The military usually uses the Army Field Manual but veered from it at Guantanamo Bay, allegedly using techniques such as sleep deprivation. Administration officials confused matters, according to McCain and the retired officials, by declaring that U.S. personnel are not bound by long-standing prohibitions of cruel treatment under the Geneva Conventions when interrogating suspected terrorists who are non-U.S. citizens on foreign soil. As a result, there was one set of rules for interrogating prisoners of war, and there was another for 'enemy combatants.'" The line drawn between "prisoners of war" and "enemy combatants" is only as fine as that between a "War on Terrorism" and a war with a specific terrorist. That said, the Army Field Manual was our bible in basic training, at least at the end of the '80s, and it was pretty specific about what is and isn't torture. To drive the point further home, our drill sergeants also forced us to sit at attention for hours while they made us watch films from the '50s that expressly stated what is not permissible when dealing with the enemy; the cast of McHale's Navy appeared in many of them. Geez, now I'm starting to sound like Grandpa Simpson, rattling on about how much more civilized war was, back when he was a new recruit. What was I going to say? Oh, yeah. This article once again confirms why--on the Republican side of the fence--I have always preferred McCain to Bush: Unlike George, who fought the war in Texas, John McCain understands first-hand what it means to be a real soldier, and nobody understands the nature of war quite like someone who's been there.

Thought I just did. Arab, muslim, or persian that I have met, always seemed like nice people. He could have parlayed his POW status into a comfy job in D.C. not making any waves. But he couldn't, he's a leader. I'm so glad to see the beginning of a groundswell for Sen. John McCain, even if some of you are Canadians who cannot vote for him! He is a morally upright man who IMHO would be the best president this country has seen since at least 2000, if not before. He is intelligent, just, doesn't seem to be arrogant or self-important (four qualities totally lacking in the current Prez Shrub), and possesses a sense of humor, as well. Have you seen his appearances on David Letterman's show? What a classic! He isn't just all talk and no action. He knows first-hand (unlike Shrub) the horrors and pain of war. He actually thinks before he acts. And I don't think that he'd be taking "a six-week vacation every month", either. He would be the best choice for President in 2008, don't you agree? It really is embarrassing to live in such a once-/potentially-again great country and have such a dipsh*t for our "leader". Twice this cretin was elected, and I cannot believe that this happened without a lot more ballot tampering than we heard about. They can do things that gestures and other modes of communication cannot. But your original claim was that words are all we have. But that isn't true. For instance, I was able to derive from the tone of the words(this claim is debateable-words and their tone are not one in the same) that you did not like my post. Yours was an unsound generalization. In other words, your first claim was not precise. I'm in agreement with a majority of the points of your second post. However, what is at issue here is how we use words. Of course you do not a Phd to make a claim. But a special rigor must be involved in the construction of proper claims. For instance, "talk is always good" is an unrigorous appeal to the power of discussion. But, what about talk of how to murder children? That surely is not "good" talk." The point here is that words should be used more precisely. Time for rugby. This post was not as good as I wanted it to be. Have fun dismantling it. These are vicious people, suicidal people. I do not think they should be accorded the rank and treatment of men and women in uniform from other nations. That is what this amendment does. I and my girlfriend had our rights violated in el paso, texas at the border by homeland security. We were yelled at, swarmed, intimidated, and threatened with arrest. My girlfriend was locked in a room surrounded by by plexiglass and was surrounded by tall men dressed head-to-toe in black, and wearing pistols, who interrogated her and compelled her to sign a confession without an attorney present, and without notifying the nearest consulate in accordance with the 3rd Geneva Convention, after a long drive across the Mexican desert. I repeatedly asked where she was, and homeland security inspector who knew exactly what was happening lied to me and misdirected me. The inspectors worked very hard, and in a concerted fashion, to separate me from her so that I could not protect her, legally. They did that by lying and violating federal laws regarding detainee treatment. A lawsuit has been filed in federal court in Texas. When I tried to photograph inspectors using the swarming technique, where 10 or so inspectors "swarm" over a car, I was confronted and asked for the camera. The batteries dropped out when it was seized. I was interrogated, and a full criminal background check was done. I was ordered to delete the photograph, and forensic data recovery techniques have one yielded the unimportant upper portion of the picture of interest. I have the rest of the data, but I don't know how to reconstruct it. My girlfriend was expelled from the United States based on an unmirandized, coerced interrogation (men shouting in my face, suggesting I was a criminal, and threatening to unlawfully arrest me, and ruin me) which is being challenged in court. My girlfriend had a valid visa and a 6 month permit. Paranoid inspectors harassed me, went through my books, suggested that I was a terrorist, inquired as to my religious background (to my girlfriend), and verbally challenged and attacked me for possessing books on science and aeronautics. They stripped her of her rights and credentials, and repeatedly (as I said) lied to me, and played dirty throughout the incident. The inspectors when through all of my personal items, laughing crudely, and left my DVD player partially disassembled (faceplate off). When I asked an inspector, who had taken out my maps and strewn them all over the seat as if he expected me to put them back, to put them back, he started to look and act towards me in a hostile manner, and I believe he was desireous of parlaying the situation into some kind of confrontation. I of course used excellent self-control and remembered everything that I could, and went straight away to a supervisor, whom I requested, and requested to make a complaint. The supervisor tried to inhibit and otherwise block my attempts to hold him accountable. In the later event, with the camera, I asked why I could not take pictures, to document wrongdoing. I was told it was a secured federal facility, and that "we have to protect the identities of the inspectors", which doesn't make sense, because the inspectors are public servants. Each should have a name tag and a metal badge with a unique badge number. At the time this started, I was moving to El Paso. All the paperwork was legal, and all activities at the time, and intended activities within the scope of, and planned after, crossing the border were of a lawful nature. Because of the incompetence and depraved indifference of immigration and homeland security (the same people that brought you the 9-11 terrorist) I have been interrogated almost 120 times now. My girlfriend and I live in a tiny, noisy, filthy neighborhood in one of the most dangerous border cities in the world. I've carefully and clearly documented this and reported it to the authorities including the american consulate, a federal judge, the department of justice, the state attorney general, and Congressional representatives. Nothing has been done.

I would suggest to anyone never to go to Texas. Stay away from Texas, and international checkpoints in El Paso. There is also a road checkpoint for illegal immigrants north of Texas, but south of Taos, in New Mexico. The way to cross is to do so separately, with primary and secondary meetup points South of the border, and primary and secondary meetup points North of the border. There are sensitive thermal cameras at the border which can detect warm handprints, if someone was sitting in the passenger seat 1 hour prior, and what objects inside the car have been recently moved. For example, if you took your wallet out and put it under your seat, it would be as bright as a neon sign. The thermal imaging can also be used to tell about your level of anxiety. It's another tool, in the war on your body, and the war on your mind, that happens at the border. Expect to be subjected to extreme psychological stress; they are testing you. They want you to make a mistake, to trip up, to feel bad, to feel small, insignificant, and worthless. They want you to say things, that they can use to harm your family, and your interests. They want you to feel that the law under which they are supposed to operate doesn't matter, but that they matter, because they want to be not just gatekeepers, but judges and juries, and they want you to believe that. What's important is that you remain calm. Imagine if a bomb was going off, if you are surrounded by flashing lights, by naked people, by any kind of distraction, and try to remember license plates, badge numbers, name tags, times, demeanors, and descriptions. Cultivate neutrality of emotion, because they can smell that, too. Don't be really happy or really angry at anything they say or do. Verbally invoke your rights, but do so with decorum--don't give them anything they can parlay into a problem for you. Some of them will try to make you feel sick, using psychological methods--that's what the swarming is about, a crude intimidation and territoriality exercise--but you have to relax. Keep your heart at an even rate, and remember that the homeland security inspectors are the criminals, not you. Try to remember each one of their names, and relate it to a memory jog with their face or personality. I remember a K-9 handler named Wolfe--they're usually harder than that, but that's an example for you. Try to write down things on a pad of paper, but they will try to grab the pad, so return it to your shirt pocket--it should be small. Do not resist physically or verbally, but object verbally while exhibiting full compliance. Their rules of engagement allow measures on a continuum ranging across and based on your non-compliance to verbal orders, physical resistance, and direct confrontational behavior. You have a higher code of conduct than they do, because you are better than them. Remember that. Most of those men and women out there don't serve their country, but rather spend their days stripping helpless mexican women of their rights either outright, or through a variety of flimsy pretexts fortified by purjurous affidavits by other inspectors. In Texas, law enforcement will not treat you like a human being. People who obey the law are supposed to be protected by it--I wasn't protected, but I was repeatedly threatened, harassed, and antogonized by homeland security inspectors who kept trying to initiate scenerios where they could arrest me. I believe they were doing so on the orders of a supervisor named Neaderlin (at the Bridge of the Americas, El Paso, Texas). I presume he was doing that in retaliation for the complaints I documented and filed against him and those working with him. If you are crossing the border, cross in the morning with a valid passport. Stay in the left lanes. Keep the conversation as brief as possible, do not volunteer any information, and don't smile or try to be nice because many of the inspectors are power-lusted sadists who unfortunately see courtesy as either a weaken or disingenuousness. Answer right away, looking at them directly, with no pauses in speech or furtive eye movements. The passport is a legal warrant of and by the State Department that orders inspection stations not to impede international travelers. It also orders them to aid and assist international travelers bearing the passport. The homeland security inspectors will play games with you and try to get into your mind. They will pretend to be your friend, but when talk of actual "rights" comes up, they become very detached and cold. Those who appear to be sympathetic are little more than "hollow empathizers" because they will never swear out affidavits attesting to the human rights abuses that they have undoubtedly personally witness, for purely job security reasons. And, if called upon, the same person who acts like your friend today will turn on you and suborn perjurous testimony against you, if called upon to do so by other homeland security inspectors or a supervisor or supervisors. Some inspectors are also very threatening and mean. They will order you to walk here and there, like a dog, and point right in your face with their finger, and point you to a sign that says you can be locked up for 5 years for "impeding" them, just by exercising your right to remain silent. Defy them, you say? You can, and you'll be unlawfully arrested. You will then have a criminal record, and be a ward of the state of Texas, and will probably be raped and get AIDS. You can have it thrown out, but according to my figures, the cost of actually guaranteeing your rights, legally, is from $54,000. to $58,000. Much better to carefully document everything, and seek the termination of those homeland security inspectors involved for criminal conspiracy and other RICO type violations. If that doesn't work, the best thing is to leave. Texas doesn't seem to like intelligent, inquisitive people, and prefers obsequious, weak-minded people who have been carefully indoctrinated in learned-helplessness when confronted with abusive law enforcement. Even the most basic, civic-minded questioning of authority is interpreted in Texas as a massive threat to the culture, and they flinch--they get really angry about that. When I went to the federal courthouse, I was severely harassed, and a man kept trying to put his hands on me, and I had to make a complaint to the court clerk, and tell them that I didn't want to come back anymore, even though I had business there as a plaintiff/private citizen. They didn't care. All the institutions in the Texas border region have been sapped and drained by the Hispanic-loaded tendency not to challenge those institutions and not to hold them accountable, to the point that they don't function anymore. White people in Texas can also expect a pretty large dose of reverse-discrimination in the universities, where money will be hidden and artificial barriers raised to prevent upward mobility for whites, because the only people getting promotions and power are those who sacrifice whites to reverse discrimination. I recently picked up a form for an internship, and I was shocked to see what was written across the top: "you need not be hispanic to apply". Well, why would I have to be, anyway? We've not supposed to be discriminating, right? I know right now that I'll never be accepted because of my skin color, and it makes me sick that corporate america, by sponsoring grants that only minorities beneficiaries of reverse-discrimination end up getting, is contributing to racism.
