They could Nuke that island and some of those rats would probably survive. That Refuge group is likely fighting a lost cause but I'm all for killing every stinking rat on the planet. Get cracking boys!

I can't believe no-one's thought to call the Pied Piper of Hamlin. Failing that, send in KillBill, he can bore the rats to death.

make rats into the next popular purse-pet, and then every asshole will want one... then the problem would be solved..... and then people like Paris Hilton will have pets that have more of a resemblance to them...

Damn, I thought it was a story about jews getting shipped off to Madigascar. I know Madigascar is spelled wrong, but who knows how to spell it correctly?

The rats have been there for almost 230 years, why the sudden urge? If the other wildlife population was going to be totally wiped out, shouldn't it have happened by now.

Static, if he's not dead he's certainly in a hurt locker. Ah, the days in high school where I blew the bell curve so bad they to start using some other method to keep the rest of the class from failing. Other kids hated me for it, so next reunion, I'm blowing the place all to hell.

Static, why did you post a picture of a tasmanian devil when writing about rodents? You can't not tell the difference between a marsupial and placental mammal, then perhaps you don't deserve an opinion on biological issues.

"Matilda Briggs was not the name of a young woman, Watson," said Holmes in a reminiscent voice. "It was a ship which is associated with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared. But what do we know about vampires? Does it come within our purview either?

O.K losers, I am off to watch an animated adaptation of a Richard Adams story and pass out. You all suck. Guess the flick and I'll say a prayer for you. May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

It's not cats they need, but ratters..... American Rat Terrier Cairn Terrier West Highland Terrier Scottie Each of these breeds was developed to hunt and kill rats. They do a damn fine job, too. Plus, they won't eat the bird as cats might.

Rats are the jewel in the crown of Darwinian theory, I just wish they were the size of bears then we'd REALLY have something to fuckin worry about..

Hawkweed, your wish is granted. There's a creature called the nutria that gets to be about 3 or 4 feet long, 20 pounds. Huge amphibious rodent, moving up along the Mississippi basin from the ruins of Louisiana.

Maybe they should introduce the rat's natural enemy to that island: the dreaded Zimbabwian. They must have hundreds of different rat recipies by now. Then again, when they've eaten the rats they'll just continue on and eat all the birds. Looks like a lose-lose situation to me.

Marty, please tell me you aren't just now hearing of nutria? Folks here have been trapping them and selling the fur for years. And before anyone says, "ew, rodent fur" I'd like to remind you that beavers are also rodents.

Scientists should focus more on why rats and cockroaches are so hard to wipe out instead of studying the species that are so easily killed off. What is it in their system that allows them to prosper in filth that would immediatly sicken and kill humans?

Aye, their immune systems alone gives them a formidable survival advantage! Look at the amount of poisons we have thrown at them that have become obsolete 1 or 2 generations later

I figured it was their immune systems but what is the chemical or whatever that makes them immune to things that would kill us? Sort of how the vaccine for some diseases is a mutated form of the same disease. Maybe we're better off with Darwin dealing with these things.
