Don't go near the water
Honolulu Star-Bulletin | Submitted by: JohnnyAloha
"Oh, my God, you can't even recognize him anymore." ... "He's all swollen up and he looks like he's 350 pounds." ... "Because of this, falling into the Ala Wai water, he's just lost his leg, his liver shut down and his kidneys have shut down. " ... "Doctors said in order for him to survive, they may have to remove his other leg and left arm."

pretty scary stuff, especially considering this is a bacterial infection most of us are exposed to on a routine basis. had no idea a mode of transmission was via water, which is frightening (but not surprising). oh, right. first post.

"He was such a great man, wonderful guy, he'd give you the shirt off his back." Or a HAND huh? pfffft! By the way, notice how the family is talking about him in past tense already? Makes you wonder what the doctor's prognosis really is.

This is really sad. I don't know the dude, but his people say he's a "wonderful" guy. It sucks ass that a "wonderful" person is made to suffer something that really needs to happen to a turd like one of the people I work with. Similar scenario ~ buzzed and fell off a dock - resulting in several lacerations and contusions - after a drunken sail - and cheating on his wife -whom he only married because she came from a monied family ... and who is still alive, well and healthy, still getting drunk and cheating on his wife. Or maybe he pissed off one of the Hawiian gods like Peter did in that one episode of 'the brady bunch'.

Amazing how people wonder how such a thing could happen... Idiots! It's called DEATH and comes in many, many forms...sometimes even in canned salmon. Rarely does it call with reservations and an itinerary!

yes, "how could it happen to him?" seriously, how could it? it's not like this guy was trashed, walking around late at night, and fell off a dock into polluted water or something. oh, wait...

Pfft.....only a "before" pic in the article, I want an "after" pic. Speaking of Peter Brady just saw the actor that played him doing an infomercial for some exercise equipment recently. Famous Peter Brady quote(while trying to sound like Bogart): "Sho, you shay we're having pork chopsh and apple shauce?"

I've heard that marrying a rich woman can be one of the most stressful careers anybody can tackle.

Dammit, I've been cut many times. I stapled myself once. My hand has had to-the-death battles with cats. And I just walk away to carry on wasting my life. Where's the justice?

Dammit, I've been cut many times. I stapled myself once. My hand has had to-the-death battles with cats. And I just walk away to carry on wasting my life. Where's the justice? Everyone seems to have stapled themselves at least once, myself included. Not too long ago I sliced my finger with a really dirty, greasy pair of scissors...and a week later it was totally healed like nothing happened. Do you suppose some people are just more prone to diseases like this? Or is it simply a matter of luck?

I don't think it's that easy to get the decease. I mean there's not a lot of people I've heard or know that have gotten that. One time I sliced have my nail and piece of my finger with a razor blade full with engine oil and dirt. Well I'm still alive.

Group A strep causes a lot of diseases besides the flesh eating disease. Ever had strep throat? Same bacteria. It's also been isolated from the skin of perfectly healthy people. Granted, the pictures of people with massive systemic infections are pretty gross, which makes it understandable to be scared of it, but the disease is really quite rare, especially given the ubiquity of the microorganism.

A few years back , they decided the Rio Grande ( yeah , that one ) .. was VERY polluted. The farmers in Texas had it even worse. The monies they were going to raise thru bonds was going to matched by the Feds. People fought it. No joke . They didn't want clean water , they wanted a park named after somebody I never heard of. They figured out how to have less polluted water. They raised the level of allowable pollutants in the water , and then , WOW , it passed. Last year , it was decided that our water is polluted again. They will fix it now. At 100 times the cost of before. I use bottled water. I had it tested. VERY CLEAN. But I still bathe in city water. I still worry. Point to the story? I have never had flesh eating disease , and I try to never fall in the water drunk & bloody. MTC ©®

im an rn in a sicu at a local hospital and the dreaded flesh eating bacteria isnt all that rare i've only been working as a nurse for 3 months and seen 2 cases of it. both victims had enough flesh to spare. one lady had it to her left upper and lower quadrants and the fellow was 400+ lbs and had it to his right groin circumflexing to his buttocks. they both had diabetes mellitus. I asked why were they not on contact isolation and was told that you usually have to be immunocompromised to be succeptible. so stay healthy because the staph a is naturally occuring flora to most everybody.

"so stay healthy because the staph a is naturally occuring flora to most everybody. " -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about, since you don't even know the pathogen involved. It is Group A STREP. As in Streptococcus pyogenes . It is not a staph infection. Secondly, people with diabetes are also on the list of people who would be more susceptible to this disease than the regular population. The perceived risk of necrotizing fasciitis is overblown by the media, as is any disease they decide to sensationalize. You'd best leave the microbiology to the experts, and go back to your bedpans.

As someone Born and Raised in Honolulu,I knew from 5 years old never to play around or even go near the Ala wai....What the hell was he doing?! Ala Wai IS basically a manmade stream that partially processed sewage runs off into even without heavy Rains cause that what the fucken thing is there for.(it's part of a old Sewage system)

You know, Duder should use that fucking sketch as Rotten's mascot, or something. In place of the guy up on the left with his mouth nailed shut with the piece of metal. We just expect that sketch to show up and when it does, we all know exactly what it is. I was reading the paper today, saw some stories about crimes that included composites of the assailants, and I'm thinking, "at least those ones don't suck as hard as the sketch of that Rotten guy."
